What a year 2015 was!

2015 has been a fantastic year, a number of first’s and some big achievements. For Matthew climbing has taken off and 2016 looks to be even a bigger year. But to reflect on few key events of the past year.

Surrey Summit Performance Squad

Matthimg_0244ew chose to give up competitive swimming in favour of concentrating on his ParaClimbing. At this time he looked to increase his training hours and joined the Performance Squad, who he trains with now three times a week as well as a 1:1 session with his coach Robin O’Leary once a week. Matthew said ‘I enjoy training with the squad and they have made me feel very much a part of the team.’

Rock Days

Dinas Rocks, South Wales Jul 2015

Poodle Traverse V5

During the summer Matthew enjoyed his first experience of outdoor climbing. Attending Squad Rock Days in Cheddar Gorge and trips to Dina’s Rocks and Glen Nevis. At Glen Nevis where he was joined by his brother they both did their first multi-pitch.

Eagle Radio Local Heroes Sports Award

Eagle Radio Local Heroes Awards

Award Ceremony

In September the local community recognised Matthew’s efforts and Eagle Radio awarded him their Sports Award at their Local Heroes Ceremony at G-Live in Guildford. Guests included the hit band Scouting for Girls, Britain’s Got Talent Bars and Melody. A proud moment indeed.

ParaClimbing Series 2015

From September to December 4 rounds of the ParaClimbing Series were wp-1450185143467.jpgheld. This year was the first year Matthew had entered all four rounds. They started in Edinburgh where they were jointly held with a national Junior Lead Climbing competition. The other rounds were held in London, Newcastle and Manchester. A fantastic performance was given by Matthew at each one and he came first in each round. He was made British Champion in his category at Manchester in December.

GB ParaClimbing Team

The highlight of the year had to be being invited to join the GB ParaClimbing Team for 2016. An ambition which Matthew has been working towards for a few years. He looks forward to representing his team, sport and country in the new year.

Here’s looking to 2016! Happy New Year to all.
